We might still be in the midst of a heatwave, but our cosy apple & cinnamon crumble never fails when it comes to putting us in the mood for autumn. With just a handful of ingredients (you've probably already got at home!) get yourself in an autumnal mood with our foolproof recipe! The perfect precursor to Halloween and inspired by spooky nights! This proves to be a hit any time of year, but it's definitely something we look forward to every autumn and winter!

We make this recipe in any baking dish we have - the more rustic or tavern the vibe, the better! This recipe uses brown sugar and cinnamon which when baked creates a caramel taste, perfect for Halloween or bonfire night!
The ingredients and (very simple!) recipe are listed below!

Serve warm with cream, custard or anything you like. It's even yummy on it's own. This is the perfect pud to make and keep in the fridge, ready to reheat all week (if you can make it last!)

This recipe can be baked in any oven proof dish, so amounts can be amended to suit. This recipe is based on an enamel rectangular dish 18cm x 13cm in size, but as you can see we've baked our crumble in a 15cm round dish for a thicker crumble topping.
For the Filling:
Approx. 220g apples, cut into smaller pieces (this is a judgement call, dependent on the size of the apples! You need enough to cover the bottom of your dish and then some!)
A big pinch of sugar (we go for brown for a caramelised flavour, but normal sugar is fine too!)
A big pinch of cinnamon
A big pinch of sugar (we go for brown for a caramelised flavour, but normal sugar is fine too!)
A big pinch of cinnamon
For the Crumble:
150g plain flour
Big pinch of salt (we use sea salt but regular salt is fine!)
90g brown sugar (normal sugar is fine, or even half and half - we just like the caramel-style taste that comes from using brown sugar!)
1 tablespoon cinnamon
100g butter (straight from the fridge works best!)
RECIPE
Preheat your oven to 180C
For the Filling:
- Peel and cut your apples, leaving no skin or pips. (Cut them into smaller pieces, we recommend no bigger than an inch!)
- Lay them on the bottom of your dish leaving an even spread
- Grab a big pinch of sugar and scatter this all over the cut apples (toss them for an even coating if you need to!)
- Do the same with the large pinch of cinnamon
- (Leave your filling to one side for now)
For the Crumble:
-
Measure your plain flour
- Add your salt, sugar and cinnamon to the flour and stir together
- Add the cold butter straight to the mix to save on washing up!
- With clean hands, mix the ingredients together, breaking apart the butter and mixing it into the dry ingredients with your fingers to form breadcrumbs (Cold butter works best here, as anything warmer will not create a breadcrumb-like texture!)
- Ensure all big bits of butter have been broken down into the rest of the ingredients
- Scoop up your topping and lay over the apples, ensuring an even coverage!
- Bake for approx. 30 mins on 180C (our oven is fan-assisted) After this you should start to see the crumble began to caramelise, showing you that it's baked!
Be careful when getting it out of the oven!
We hope you love this as much as we do and that it's one you bake every autumn! (and don't burn your mouth!)
